"There are as many nights as days, and the one is just as long as the other in the year's course. Even a happy life cannot be without a measure of darkness, and the word 'happy' would lose its meaning if it were not balanced by sadness." - Carl Jung
I started the day with my walk, morning mass and then breakfast with the students. Students love Fridays! They were definitely in an upbeat mood today. Tonight we had the big Halloween party and the freshmen were quite excited about that this morning. Attending your first Halloween party is reason to be excited!!
I spent most of the morning at the radio station taping this weekend’s shows. We did some pretty lightweight shows for this weekend. Both Xuefei and I have colds so our voices sound terrible and apart from the upcoming US presidential election there wasn’t a whole lot that I really wanted to cover this weekend. I had planned to have my guest on one of the shows, but he too had a cold and that sort of messed up the plan to do an interview with him. On such occasions I have found that the best thing to do is to just chat about whatever; listeners always like those kinds of shows so that isn’t a problem. Shows like this weekend’s give me a chance to pick on Xuefei, which I really enjoy. I do that anyway, but these kinds of shows make it a lot easier to sustain a prolonged attack!
I got a haircut after lunch today. That was sort of occasioned by the new Cool Movie Club poster with a picture of me looking rather old with my long grey hair. Actually for the .70 cents it costs for a haircut here, I could easily afford to have my hair trimmed every other week. Actually I could have it done weekly without a big budget item!
A couple of students were in the business center getting some clothes mended when I was gettting my haircut, so they sat down and bothered me for a while. They were pushing me to spend a little money and have my hair colored. I would have nothing to do with that and made it clear that distinguished professors in medical colleges don’t need to color their hair. ^_^ I sort of set myself up with that statement as the response I got was: “Most professors in medical colleges don’t!” Sometimes it is not easy being me!!
I didn’t have any classes this afternoon so I hung around the office chatting with students after I got my haircut. Jingjing and Lina were both in the office this afternoon. Jingjing had a job interview around 3:30 and Lina went along with her. I’m not sure how these job interviews work, but having someone go along with you for a job interview seemed kind-of-weird to me.
The Halloween party went really well. The young Maryknoll teachers helped to make it a great evening full of fun as you can see from some of these pictures. Rad, Jackie and Kevin came over early for dinner before the party and they all seem to be doing really well.
These students with the best handmade masks won a free dinner with the young teachers.
Jingjing had a great time!
Today was also Jackie's birthday so the students made sure that there were some birthday presents to be opened.
The infamous Marina Wang told a scary story. It wasn't that scary until she took off her mask!! ^_^
It was a great night full of scary stories, songs, games and being together as friends! While the Friday night program is officially listed as an English Corner activity,it could best be described as "Friendship Corner! It is a great way for the students to
unwind after a busy week in the classroom. The young Maryknoll teachers had a great time and as always they bring a certain "gift of presence" with them whenever they come. The students now feel totally at ease with Jackie, Rad and Kevin and their
weekly presence is a real blessing for our students. I feel very lucky to have this group of young teachers with me here in Jilin this year. In more ways than I can mention on this blog they contribute to the youth ministry in Jilin. Tomorrow they will be joining some of the students from the medical college to work with the street boys. I am sure that will be the beginning of a wonderful experience for my students, the young teachers and the boys! Working with great young kids like my students and the young Maryknoll teachers fills me with all-kinds-of reasons to be optimistic about the future!
Today’s gospel and some comments:
On one occasion when Jesus was going to the house of a leader of the Pharisees to eat a meal on the sabbath, they were watching him closely. Just then, in front of him, there was a man who had dropsy. And Jesus asked the lawyers and Pharisees, "Is it lawful to cure people on the sabbath, or not?" But they were silent. So Jesus took him and healed him, and sent him away. Then he said to them, "If one of you has a child or an ox that has fallen into a well, will you not immediately pull it out on a sabbath day?" And they could not reply to this. Lk 14:1-6
A scripture scholar back in the seminary said that the phrase used for “watching closely” means “to watch surreptitiously and menacingly.” The Pharisees were giving him the stare. There was no compassion in the way they saw people; in fact they scarcely saw people at all – only rules and breaches of rules.
In his Gospel and Acts Luke mentions Pharisees 35 times. Scholars believe that the reason for this is that there were many Christian Pharisees in the Lucan communities, many rigorists who wanted to impose Jewish law on Christians, and it was necessary to remind everyone of how the Jewish Pharisees had opposed Jesus' work. Pharisaism is a constant temptation for Christians: this has been so from the beginning and it is still the case. It has proved very difficult to get it into one's head that our salvation is through the grace of Christ and not through observance of law. The 19th century Danish philosopher Kierkegaard said that human beings long for a purely legal relationship with God; then they would know how to keep God behind a line, at arm's length, in a place apart: in other words, out of their life. But this kind of relationship is not possible, for God is a loving Father.
